Lip Care Quiz

Simone Wyndham, Shizen Creator shares her most prized lip care advice...

Why are your lips so dry?

Firstly, your lips don't have any oil glands, and this is where the problems begin. So, be careful of products which don't contain any moisture, but merely coat the lips. Also beware of products that make your lips tingle as this can also dry them out.

Read through the ingredients of your current lip products and ditch your unnatural and petroleum/mineral oil based lip balms. Replace them with Shizen Lip products. Our products contain natural oils, butters, waxes and pure essential oils so they can moisturise and protect your lips.

Dry Lips:

To beat dry lips, avoid petroleum based lip products. They tend to coat rather than moisturise. Go for one of Shizen’s natural wax based lip balms with essential oils to create a barrier and moisturise at the same time.

Exfoliate:

Sugar particles exfoliate by helping to shift and break down the dry skin. Or use the Shizen Lip Scrub with added oils and waxes to moisturise and exfoliate.

Don't use an old toothbrush. It's way too harsh for the gentle skin on your lips.

Apply your favourite lip balm to your lips and use the steam from a hot shower to soften the dry skin. After the shower, use a face washer to easily remove any dry skin.

Red Lips:

Dry lips always look smaller and paler. Healthy lips look fuller and redder. Apply a natural wax based lip balm every morning and night and exfoliate once a week.

Should I lick my lips?

One of the things that many people do when their lips feel dry is to lick them in an effort to moisturise the lips. In most cases however, this doesn't solve the problem but makes matters worse. So don't do it.

What about my diet, does that cause dry lips?

Stress, tiredness and the flu all lower the immune system. This makes minor infections around the mouth and lips more likely to occur. These may dry the lips out and the corners of the mouth are usually affected. Make sure you have a diet rich in vitamins C, E and B, and also zinc, iron and beta-carotene. And of course get plenty of sleep and make sure you exercise to help boost your immunity.
